Honey — It Shrinks the Cough!
It has been a few years since the original study demonstrating the potential effectiveness of honey in treating cough in children was published. This week, Cohen et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2011-3075) take this product even further by performing a double-blind randomized placebo controlled study to compare the effects of a single night dose of three different honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, and labiatae honey) to placebo on nighttime cough and sleep in 300 children ages 1 to 5 with an upper respiratory infection lasting less than 7 days. I’ll leave the results for you to read about, but you’ll find the ending of this study to be a sweet one if you are a fan of using honey to treat symptomatic cough.
