Adolescent Dating Violence: Are Public Schools Prepared to Deal with This Problem?

Previous studies have identified a prevalence of dating violence in anywhere from 10% to 30% of U.S. teens. Given this very high prevalence, are public school guidance counselors prepared to deal with it and offer prevention strategies? Khubchandani et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2011-3130) address this question by studying results of questionnaires sent to more than 500 high school counselors on teen dating violence. The results are disappointing and suggest that we need to do more with high schools to educate counselors on this problem before the prevalence statistics get even worse.
