Caffeine During Pregnancy and Lactation and Infant Nocturnal Awakening: An Association That May Not Jolt You
One might wonder if caffeine use during pregnancy or lactation takes a toll on infant offspring — with behaviors such as nighttime awakenings. Well wonder no more, thanks to a Brazilian study by Santos et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2011-1773) that involved interviewing mothers at time of delivery and three months post-delivery while tracking infant night waking. The results may surprise you but I promise will not keep you up at night. Your patients will certainly be interested in the results of this study, so enjoy a cup of coffee while reading this interesting cohort study.
